Hey Sucker
America’s Failed Immigration Policy

October 19, 2001

When the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, there were no bureaucrats from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) waiting to greet them with offerings of welfare benefits.

More to the point, the Pilgrims were prepared to scratch a new life out of an inhospitable land in the cause of freedom.  Rather than an expectation of entitlement from the New Land, they came bearing gifts in the context of America’s first written constitution, The Mayflower Compact (November 21, 1620).

In contrast to stepping off of the boat and immediately entering the queue for public housing benefits, food stamps, bilingual public education and healthcare coverage, the Pilgrims brought the ideal of individual freedom to America:

In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord, King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, &c. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern Parts of Virginia; do by these presents, solemnly and mutually in the Presence of God and one of another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid; And by Virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions and Offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the General good of the Colony; unto which we promise all due Submission and Obedience.

When those 102 passengers from the Mayflower and the Speedwell landed in Massachusetts they planted the seed for the birth of a nation the likes of which the world had never set eyes on before.

If asked to describe America, many would reflect on our country’s physical beauty and bountiful resources…and that is so.  But the real heart of America is the singularly unique American spirit; a “Can Do” attitude whose sum total is the inspiration and perspiration of the individual…a spirit and energy unleashed by the protection of personal freedoms.

Simply defined, America is the Constitution and the Bill Of Rights.  Take those embodiments of the American spirit away and only dirt is left, albeit beautiful dirt.

Tragically, the combination of two forces, (1) political correctness (with its adjunct doctrine of multiculturalism) and (2) the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), are threatening not only the future survival of the American spirit but even America’s beautiful landscape.

The INS lists four major responsibilities as its mission

  1. Conducting immigration inspections of travelers entering (or seeking entry) to the United States as they arrive at officially designated ports of entry. There are approximately 250 ports of entry in the Unites States, which include air, land and sea locations.

  2. Regulates permanent and temporary immigration to the United States. This includes legal permanent residence status, nonimmigrant status (e.g., tourists or students), and naturalization.

  3. Maintains control of U.S. borders. The Border Patrol is responsible for securing the 8,000 miles of international boundaries in vehicles, aircraft, or boats, as well as on horseback or on foot.

  4. Identifies and removes people who have no lawful immigration status in the United States. The INS also works with other Federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to uphold the laws of the United States.

Prior to September 11, the INS only allowed cocaine dealers, Russian Mafioso, waves of illegal Mexicans and a few itinerant truck bombers to slither across the American border.  After the incidents of September 11 it is obvious, to even the most forgiving, that the INS is either a joke of an agency or its hands have been tied by its superiors in the Department of Justice (formerly headed by Florida gubernatorial hopeful Janet Reno).   Unfortunately the joke is on the American citizen.

America was once known as the “Melting Pot” nation.  In practice, this made the United States a place where people from different ethnic origins were brought together and assimilated into a common culture, i.e. the American spirit.  Then came the age of political correctness with its dangerous doctrine of multiculturalism.

To quote from the Chicago Tribune, “The normal tendency of people to want to live around others with the same culture creates insular, non-assimilating communities, a facet of human nature we ignore at our peril. In cities like Miami and Los Angeles, an immigrant no longer needs to learn English to get a job because the Spanish-speaking community is so large. Assimilation to the American community is decreasing and portends political instability as well as possible violence.”

And, just like fertilizer and diesel fuel, the failure of the INS, when combined with the idiocy of multiculturalism, created a big explosion that has become a chain reaction.

The borders of the United States are a sieve.  The INS allows millions of people to illegally enter this country and enforces little, except to help these illegals pick the pocket of the working citizen taxpayer.  Any criminal or terrorist could enter this country on a “student” visa and literally disappear into the amorphous mass of multiculturalism.  What ever became of the concept that the benefits of citizenship or residency are privileges that mandate a certain amount of quid pro quo responsibility?

What practical advantage is there for a country to support a system (non-system) of immigration that plays its taxpaying citizens for suckers?

Look at reality…good immigrants become good citizens.  Bad immigrants become a threat to American Society.

Sincere immigrants learn and respect this country’s laws, speak its language and have no problem deciding where their loyalty lies.  It is rude to enter somebody’s home and not respect it.

Consequently, America has become the plumber’s leaking sink.  In a misguided effort to create mini city-states of multiculturalism, America’s ever-sensitive doctrine of political correctness has cost Americans their security and their rights.  The U.S. citizen is now being told to trade liberty for security.  This is sinful if not indictable!

It is the job of the INS to control immigration into America.  The INS should know who is in this country and remove them if they are a threat.  But the INS took your money and did not do its job.  More specifically, the Department of Justice (under the “leadership of Janet Reno) allowed the INS to keep its eyes closed and actually encourage systemic abuse because of some politically motivated “crackpot” agenda.

Simultaneously, the Department of Justice demonstrated great zeal in the murders of Randy Weaver’s wife, son and dog…all in the name of protecting America.  Where was that zeal as America raced towards a collision on September 11?

In any other venue, that would be called gross negligence, if not criminal fraud.

In the future, the INS might try to execute its mission with a bit of common sense…although that may be a bit of wishful thinking.

  1. Do not expect American citizens to yield their Constitutional guarantees.

  2. Find all illegal aliens and throw them out of the U.S.

  3. Secure the U.S. borders.

  4. Resurrect the concept that immigrant entry into the U.S. is a supreme privilege that carries an equal weight of responsibilities and benefits.

The American spirit is a precious gift derived from hundreds of years of human suffering and progression.  And, as something precious, it is to be treated with great care and protected.  Otherwise, we lose what we take for granted.
